Comparing loyalty platforms by reward mechanics

Compare Smile.io, LoyaltyLion and Yotpo on points, redemption choices, POS rewards and plan limits.

Compare the reward a member can earn and use, rather than counting reward types on a feature list. For each platform, check the earning rule, when points become spendable, the redemption choice, the sales channel and the plan required. Smile.io, LoyaltyLion and Yotpo illustrate materially different boundaries.

Use the same reward brief

Ask each vendor to show purchase points on eligible spend, a fixed discount, a flexible redemption if you need one, and the effect of a partial return. Repeat a required redemption at the till. Record the proposed plan and integration route beside each result.

Smile.io

Smile’s fixed rewards have a set discount and points cost and can be configured for online or POS use. Its incremental rewards let online customers choose how many points to redeem within a configured scale; Smile says that mechanic is unavailable for POS rewards.

Its reward table also separates Shopify, Shopify POS and BigCommerce. For example, free shipping is listed for Shopify online but not Shopify POS, while some other types require Essential or Standard plans.

If flexible redemption in store is essential, ask Smile to show an acceptable supported setup on the quoted plan.

LoyaltyLion

LoyaltyLion can hold purchase points pending through an approval period. Its purchase rule calculates points from item prices after discounts, excludes shipping and has a separate tax setting.

Its Shopify POS guide, available on the Classic plan and above, lists fixed and percentage discounts, several product rewards and checkout redemption with fixed amounts, increments or an amount staff enter. It excludes gift-card redemption, free shipping and specified subscription rewards. A separate custom POS route has different technical limits, so establish which route the proposal uses.

Ask the vendor to show the promised reward and the effect of a refund on both earned points and any points spent on a reward.

Yotpo Loyalty & Referrals

Yotpo’s Shopify rewards guide describes earning rules as activities customers complete to earn points and rewards. The guide says the Earning Rules page is available to merchants on Pro, Premium and Enterprise plans.

Yotpo’s Shopify POS guide describes an integration intended to let customers sign up for the rewards programme and redeem points in both in-store and online settings.

Ask which POS route, reward type and implementation work are included in the proposal.
