Explaining excluded products and transactions in LoyaltyLion
Customers should know before checkout when a product or order will not earn points.
Under LoyaltyLion’s Make a purchase rule, shipping never earns points on any plan or platform, and no setting changes that. Under Customer gets on the rule, Award points for tax determines whether tax earns points; the Help Center guidance names no excluded product category or product-exclusion control.
Name the rule precisely
The Make a purchase rule awards points when a customer buys from an online store. Under Customer gets, Award points for subtotal is always on and cannot be turned off; points are calculated from item prices after any discounts.
Shipping is the only transaction element explicitly stated not to earn points. LoyaltyLion’s Help Center page, Activity: Make a purchase, identifies no other excluded transaction type.
The guidance names no excluded product category and describes no product-exclusion control. It does not state whether a Points Modifier can be set to zero or how a product, collection or subscription item is selected for a modifier.
A Points Modifier can award more or fewer points for particular products, collections or subscription items. It is available on Plus plans or as an add-on.
Tax is configurable, not a fixed exclusion: Award points for tax decides whether tax earns points, whether or not tax is already included in the item price. The setting starts off for stores in US or Canadian dollars and on for stores in every other currency.
On Adobe Commerce (Magento), Award points for tax is always on and cannot be changed. Shipping never earns points, and there is no setting to change that.

Keep changes fair and visible
Tell members that shipping never earns points and whether Award points for tax is on. For any Points Modifier, describe only the points outcome it is configured to produce.
Keep the order confirmation and points history consistent with the earning rules members are given.
The ACCC’s Customer loyalty schemes page recommends ways businesses can improve their schemes and accepts reports about potentially misleading behaviour. The ACCC uses reports to inform its education, compliance and enforcement work, but does not investigate individual complaints.
