Rewards and Benefits
Part of Reward redemption experiences
Choosing redemption thresholds customers can realistically reach
Set reward thresholds from observed earning pace and customer value, then check who can realistically reach them.
Begin with a minimum redemption value equivalent to around 20% of average retail transaction value, then convert it to points using the reward’s redemption rate. Check how many completed eligible orders real members need to earn that balance, using their actual spend and earning rules.
Model the path to a first reward
Use completed eligible orders, not every advertised way to earn. For spend-based earning, estimate points per order as average eligible order value multiplied by points earned per dollar, using actual member data and applicable earning rules.
Estimate eligible orders to the first reward by dividing the points threshold by average points earned per eligible completed order. Compare that count and the time it takes with observed patterns for new members and typical repeat members, rather than setting an arbitrary target.
Inspect the distribution, not just the average: a few frequent buyers can pull it upwards. If the threshold demands more eligible orders than members typically make over their observed purchase pattern, lower it or offer a smaller first reward.
Translate the reward’s dollar value using its redemption rate, not its earning rate. Examples include a fixed $5 discount for 500 points, or an incremental $1 discount per 100 points; with the latter, a member with 512 points could redeem 500 for $5 or 300 for $3.
A fixed reward sets both the discount and points cost. An incremental reward lets members choose how many points to redeem and the corresponding discount; set minimum and maximum points to control that choice and protect margins.
Treat the 20% value as a starting point, not a substitute for checking the reward cost against the business’s margin limits and actual member baskets.
Test the boundary cases
Check balances just below, at and above the threshold, and make clear that pending points are not yet spendable.
After launch, review time to first redemption, the share of members who reach the threshold and failed claims alongside actual order cadence. Adjust the threshold if members’ observed earning pace shows it is out of reach.
